What’s the Screen Break Program All About?
The Screen Break program, led by the Dais, was created to help students like you navigate the new rules around limiting phone use in classrooms across Canada. It’s all about finding new ways to stay focused in the classroom, think critically about technology, and build healthier digital habits.
What’s a Youth Champion?
Youth Champions are high school students in Grades 9-11 who take a lead in making their schools and communities better places to learn and connect. You’ll work with other students to spark conversations about the new initiatives to limit phone use at school and create healthier tech habits, providing a space in your school and community where everyone can share their thoughts and experiences. If you’re passionate about learning, mental health, technology, and finding a better balance with your screens, this role is for you!
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Screen Break Youth Champion, here’s what you’ll get to do:
- Learn about policies and technology: Understand the rules around personal devices in schools, how these policies are made, and how technology’s design impacts our behaviour, mental health, and relationships. Learn actionable ways to influence these policies and promote positive change.
- Lead discussions and plan events: Organize workshops and events to bring students, teachers, and parents together to discuss phone use policies in school, tech use, mental health, and how to create healthier habits.
- Collaborate with a team: Work with other Youth Champions, mentors, and staff to share ideas and make an impact in your school and community.
- Build your skills: Participate in virtual workshops to develop leadership, public speaking, and facilitation skills that will set you up for success.
What You’ll Gain
- Leadership Skills: Learn how to lead discussions, speak in public, and work with a team—skills that will help you in school and beyond.
- Knowledge about Changemaking: Understand how school policies are made, why they matter, and how you can advocate for positive change.
- Mentorship: Get guidance and support from community leaders and program staff that will work with you the entire way.
- Connections: Meet other youth leaders across Canada.
- Recognition: Get paid for your time and effort!
